Spain frustrated by stubborn Serbia in Nations League draw

Spain's inaugural match following their triumph as European champions concluded in a disappointing 0-0 stalemate against Serbia during the opening fixture of their UEFA Nations League A campaign. Although the result was not a loss, it marked the hosts' fourth consecutive game without a victory (D3, L1).
The European champions, Spain, traveled to Belgrade with the intention of maintaining their supremacy in international football. Coach Luis de la Fuente fielded a formidable starting eleven to face a Serbian team that had managed only a single goal in their group stage exit at the Euros.
Contrary to expectations, it was the home team that created the early opportunities, attempting to exploit counterattacks against Spain. Sasa Lukic, Ivan Ilic, and Luka Jovic all failed to convert from the edge of the penalty area.
Eventually, La Roja found their rhythm and began generating their own scoring opportunities, with Martin Zubimendi delivering the most threatening shot of the first half, compelling a save from Predrag Rajkovic during a swift counterattack. As half-time approached, Spain intensified their efforts to secure a lead before the break, but their attempts were unsuccessful.
The second half commenced in a cautious manner, with both teams struggling to find the back of the net. However, the hosts managed to restrict the European champions to a minimal number of chances from outside the box.
Fabian Ruiz and Robin Le Normand both had opportunities before the hour mark, yet both players missed the target, raising concerns that Spain might not score within 90 minutes for the first time since the Nations League final in 2023.
Lamine Yamal then had two opportunities to put Spain ahead, but neither effort tested Rajkovic. Nico Williams followed suit, but his header was comfortably saved by the Serbian goalkeeper.
In spite of their diligent attempts, Spain was unable to achieve the breakthrough they sought and had to accept a draw while playing away.
Conversely, for Serbia, this result provided a significant boost of optimism, as they successfully restricted one of the top teams in the world to a minimal number of clear opportunities.
