Spain prosecutor seeks jail time for Ancelotti over $1.1 million in unpaid taxes.

A Spanish prosecutor is seeking a four-year and nine-month prison term for football coach Carlo Ancelotti, who is accused of evading 1 million euros ($1.1 million) in image rights taxes while at Real Madrid in 2014 and 2015.

The prosecutor said in a statement on Wednesday that, while the Italian was a tax resident in Spain at the time and filed his tax returns there, he omitted the income earned from his image rights, which totaled 4.2 million euros.

The prosecutor claimed Ancelotti committed two tax fraud crimes.
Ancelotti, who returned as Real Madrid coach in 2021, did not immediately respond to a request for comment made through Real Madrid. His attorney declined to comment.

The prosecutor accused Ancelotti of attempting to avoid paying taxes by pretending to transfer his image rights to entities with no real activity outside of Spain.

Other celebrities, including football players Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Diego Costa, have been pursued by Spanish authorities on suspicion of tax evasion. All settled and paid large fines.

Ancelotti has also worked for Real Madrid and Everton, as well as AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris St Germain, and Bayern Munich, where he won numerous titles.

Ancelotti, a former player who earned 26 caps for Italy and competed in the 1990 World Cup, has won the Champions League four times as a coach, twice with AC Milan and twice with Real Madrid.
