Spartak Moscow's Quincy Promes arrested in Dubai at Dutch request

Quincy Promes, a forward for Spartak Moscow, was detained in Dubai based on a request from the Netherlands.

He had previously been sentenced to six years in prison in absentia for drug trafficking, as confirmed by Dutch prosecutors on Wednesday evening.

The prosecutors have announced that they will request the extradition of the former Dutch international. Promes, who did not attend court hearings in Amsterdam, is not expected to return to the Netherlands anytime soon.

According to the prosecutors, Promes was arrested based on a Red Notice, which is a global request to law enforcement agencies to locate and temporarily arrest a person pending extradition.

The Amsterdam court recently stated that Promes was directly involved in the transportation of 1,360kg of cocaine from Brazil to the Netherlands through the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in two separate shipments in 2020.

In another legal case in the Netherlands, the former Ajax Amsterdam and Sevilla forward was sentenced in absentia to 18 months in prison for assault. The assault took place in 2020, where he stabbed his cousin in the knee.

Promes has denied all charges and has filed appeals in both cases.
