Sporting CP 4-1 Manchester City: Gyökeres hat-trick gives Amorim perfect Champions League send-off

Sporting CP pulled off a stunning 4-1 win over Manchester City, as striker Viktor Gyökeres netted a memorable hat-trick. The Portuguese champions, led by Ruben Amorim in his farewell European match before joining Manchester United, delivered a spirited performance, coming from behind to hand City their heaviest European defeat since 2018.

City appeared to have taken control early when Phil Foden scored to put them ahead. However, Sporting quickly responded with Gyökeres leading the charge. Seven minutes before halftime, the Swedish forward muscled past City’s Jahmai Simpson-Pusey to slot the ball home and equalize, sending the packed stadium into a frenzy.

Just seconds into the second half, Sporting shocked City again, as Maximiliano Araujo finished off a well-orchestrated move to give Sporting a 2-1 lead. Moments later, Gyökeres scored from the penalty spot following a foul by Josko Gvardiol, stretching Sporting’s advantage to 3-1.

City’s Erling Haaland missed a crucial opportunity to narrow the gap when his penalty hit the crossbar, a costly miss that only intensified Sporting’s momentum. Gyökeres capped his masterful performance with a second penalty, completing his hat-trick and sealing the 4-1 victory. His season tally now stands at 23 goals in just 17 games, showcasing the kind of form that has made him a standout star in European football.

Reflecting on the night, Amorim expressed pride in the team’s performance, calling it “a special night” and acknowledging it as a fitting end to his tenure with Sporting. City, meanwhile, will need to regroup as they face mounting pressure to secure their Champions League hopes.
