Sporting Lisbon 0-3 Borussia Dortmund: Dortmund secure commanding first leg victory over Sporting behind second-half blitz

Borussia Dortmund achieved a significant milestone by winning an away leg of a UEFA Champions League knockout tie for only the third time in their last 13 attempts, triumphing over Sporting CP with a score of 3-0 at Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Despite concluding the league phase with a four-match winless streak, Sporting had reasons to remain optimistic, particularly considering that advancing to the knockout stages of the Champions League is a rare feat for Os Leoes.
While Dortmund displayed commendable performances during the league phase, their form in the Bundesliga has indicated that Die Schwarzgelben are not performing at their peak this season, as the home team appeared to dominate the first half.
Maximiliano Araujo came closest to breaking the deadlock when his long-range shot struck the crossbar with 15 minutes elapsed.
Under their new manager Rui Borges, Sporting had yet to suffer a defeat at home (W4, D1), and they created another promising chance eight minutes before the interval when Harder’s cross from the byline found Joao Simoes, whose shot from just inside the box was directed straight at Kobel.
Recognizing the need to elevate their performance in the second half, the German side began brightly, with Karim Adeyemi's 25-yard attempt being deflected away by Rui Silva.
The match appeared to require a goal to ignite it, and Serhou Guirassy seemed the most likely player to provide that spark.
The Guinean forward has been in exceptional form in this tournament, and when Julian Brandt delivered a cross from the right flank, Guirassy was perfectly positioned to leap and direct a looping header over Silva into the right corner, marking his 10th goal of this Champions League campaign, thus equaling the tallies of Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski.
Guirassy, having opened the scoring, provided an assist just eight minutes later with a precise cross into the penalty area that found Pascal Gross. Gross skillfully redirected the ball into the net using his thigh, thereby establishing a significant advantage for the visitors.
They further extended their lead in the final ten minutes when Adeyemi completed a swift counter-attack, culminating in a flawless evening for the team.
This outcome presents Sporting with a challenging path ahead if they hope to qualify for the last 16 for only the second time since the 2008/09 season, while Dortmund remains on track in their pursuit of reaching a second consecutive final, as their impressive form in this season's competition persists.
