Sporting Lisbon 1-1 Bologna: Conor Harder's late leveller rescues Sporting from Champions League elimination

Conrad Harder’s inaugural UEFA Champions League goal secured a 1-1 draw for Sporting against Bologna, ensuring their advancement to the knockout play-off stage and putting an end to the Lions’ three-match losing streak in this tournament.

Bologna demonstrated a spirited performance despite their elimination from this season’s UCL, with defender Sam Beukema striking the crossbar just four minutes into the match with a powerful header from a corner taken by Lewis Ferguson.

Sporting took some time to find their rhythm, but Harder emerged as a key player, making a determined run past Goncalo Inacio into Bologna’s penalty area, only to have his shot saved by Franco Israel.

Bologna continued to pose a threat from set-pieces, and Sporting struggled to contain the dangerous Beukema, who flicked a corner from Ferguson to Tommaso Pobega, allowing him to score his first UCL goal since September 2022.

In a lively first half, Sporting nearly equalized before the break when Maximiliano Araujo faced Federico Ravaglia in a one-on-one situation, but the Bologna goalkeeper made a brave intervention to deny the shot.

After halftime, Pobega nearly added to Bologna's tally with a powerful, swerving shot that required a full-stretch save from Israel.

Sporting found it challenging to penetrate the Rossoblu defense, with Ivan Fresneda epitomizing the Lions’ frustration by attempting a daring lob from 30 yards that Ravaglia managed to deflect away.

Just as it seemed Sporting might exit the UCL, Harder was quick to respond to Joao Simoes’ cross, slotting the ball past Ravaglia to equalize.

The goal not only enabled Sporting to evade a fourth successive defeat in the UEFA Champions League, a situation they last experienced in 2016, but also secured their advancement to the knockout play-off stage as an unseeded team.

Bologna delivered a commendable performance, despite having no stakes other than their pride, with Vincenzo Italiano’s squad concluding their Champions League journey without a loss in three matches.
