Spurs center Victor Wembanyama enters elite company through first 82 NBA games

Victor Wembanyama, the center for the San Antonio Spurs, delivered another remarkable performance that secured his place in the annals of basketball history alongside some legendary figures.
In the Spurs' victory over the Sacramento Kings, with a score of 116-96 on Monday night, Wembanyama recorded 34 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, and three blocks. This game marked his 82nd career appearance, effectively completing a full season for the 7-foot-3 No. 1 overall pick from France in the 2023 draft.
With this exceptional outing, Wembanyama joined the ranks of Oscar Robertson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, Blake Griffin, and Sidney Wicks as one of the few players in NBA history to achieve 1,700 points, 800 rebounds, and 300 assists within their first 82 games.
Veteran point guard Chris Paul expressed confidence that the league has yet to witness Wembanyama's full potential. "I wish you could see the dedication he puts in every day," Paul remarked. "His talent is evident, but it is his determination to improve and work on his skills that stands out. As we continue to play together, I believe our chemistry will only strengthen."
Last season, Wembanyama was honored as Rookie of the Year and finished second to his compatriot Rudy Gobert in the Defensive Player of the Year voting. He averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and led the league with an impressive 3.6 blocks over the course of 71 games.
Despite averaging 4.0 blocks per game, his overall statistics have seen a slight decline this season. However, he reports feeling improved following a lengthy summer dedicated to assisting France in securing a Silver medal at the Paris Olympics.
In a recent match against Utah, Wembanyama recorded 24 points, 16 rebounds, and seven blocks, although the team suffered a narrow defeat of 111-110. He achieved a personal best in 3-point shooting, successfully making 6 out of 9 attempts against the Jazz.
This game marked Wembanyama's third instance of scoring at least 20 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, blocking five shots, and making five 3-pointers, a record that now stands as the highest in league history, surpassing two similar performances by Boston center Kristaps Porzingis.
Wembanyama also matched his career-high by shooting 6 for 12 on 3-pointers in a game against the Kings.
After a slow beginning that saw his 3-point shooting percentage drop to 25%, he has since improved to 14 for 27 on 3-pointers over his last three games.
“I’m just taking better 3s,” Wembanyama stated. “Yes, of course, it’s feeling better. I’m 20, and I’m optimistic that it will continue to feel better over the years. There is no reason for it to feel worse.”
