Stade Brestois 29 0-3 Real Madrid: Los Blancos cruise past Brest to secure spot in Champions League play-offs

A 3-0 triumph against Stade Brestois did not suffice for Real Madrid to achieve automatic qualification for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League (UCL).

The reigning champions will enter the play-offs as a seeded team, despite securing their fifth consecutive victory across all competitions.

The match, arguably the most significant in Brest's history, faced a delay due to fog covering the pitch. Once the game commenced, Kylian Mbappe, a familiar adversary, awaited them.

The Real Madrid forward had scored nine goals in ten previous encounters during his time in France, yet he squandered two promising opportunities within the first fifteen minutes, shooting high and wide from advantageous positions in the box.

Carlo Ancelotti’s squad persistently sought the opening goal, and a precise cross from Lucas Vazquez to Rodrygo appeared to have provided it. However, Marco Bizot made an exceptional save to thwart the Brazilian's attempt.

Just a minute later, Rodrygo found the net with a well-placed shot that struck the far post and went in.

The home side refused to succumb to the pressure and nearly equalized before halftime when Mama Balde's powerful volley soared just over the crossbar.

Following another impressive save by Bizot to deny Mbappé after the break, Brest believed they had leveled the score when Ludovic Ajorque's shot deflected off Aurelien Tchouameni towards the far corner. However, the home crowd was left devastated as VAR ruled the goal out for a marginal offside.

In the unforgiving realm of the UCL, Real Madrid quickly extended their lead through Bellingham, who initiated and concluded a fluid move after being set up by Vázquez on the six-yard line.

This left Les Pirates facing a daunting challenge, and Thibaut Courtois made a remarkable save to deny Kenny Lala, further complicating their efforts to reduce the deficit.

Real Madrid soon extinguished any hopes of a comeback, with Rodrygo scoring from the rebound after Mbappé was once again denied by Bizot.

A third loss in four UEFA Champions League matches indicates that Brest will be relegated to an unseeded knockout play-off position. They have become the first newcomers to the competition to suffer defeats against both Madrid and Barcelona in the same season since Leeds United in the 2000/01 season.

On the other hand, Los Blancos have scored 20 goals during their five consecutive victories and will be seeded for the play-offs, although their sluggish start ultimately prevented them from securing a spot in the top eight.
