Stade Rennais 3-0 Olympique Lyonnais: Rennes cruise past Lyon in dominant start to Ligue 1 campaign

Rennes commenced their Ligue 1 season with an impressive 3-0 victory over Olympique Lyonnais, marking their fifth triumph in the last seven encounters between the two teams.

Following a remarkable turnaround in the 2023/24 season that saw Lyon rise from the bottom of the league to secure European qualification on the final matchday, Pierre Sage aimed for a significantly better start to this campaign.

In Brittany, the visitors initially controlled possession, demonstrating their intentions from the outset.

However, this early advantage proved futile as Rennes struck twice in quick succession midway through the first half. The first goal came from a deflected free kick by Benjamin Bourigeaud, which caught Lucas Perri, the Lyon goalkeeper, off guard.

Shortly thereafter, a defensive error allowed Amine Gouiri to break through, and the Algerian skillfully rounded Perri before finding the back of the net.

The hosts nearly extended their lead minutes later, but Ludovic Blas's attempt was thwarted by the Brazilian goalkeeper.

After conceding two goals in rapid succession, Lyon appeared eager for the halftime whistle and were relieved to enter the break without further damage.

Rennes maintained their dominance after the interval and nearly scored a third goal ten minutes in when Blas received the ball in the penalty area. However, just as he was about to shoot, a last-minute block prevented the goal.

The hosts continued their relentless offensive efforts, with Gouiri's attempt for a second goal hitting the crossbar. Lyon was presented with a chance to get back into the match via a penalty, but Steve Mandanda saved Georges Mikautadze's attempt in the 72nd minute.

Sage's team was unable to recover from the missed penalty. Instead, Rennes appeared more likely to score again, successfully doing so in stoppage time when Henrik Meister executed a precise shot into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Following their joint-lowest finish in Ligue 1 in a decade last season, they will be optimistic that this commanding performance indicates a positive trajectory for the next nine months. Conversely, Lyon can only aim for improvement as they seek to build on their previous season's performance.
