Steven Dubois storms to 500m Short Track Gold at Milano Cortina 2026

The shortest race on the Olympic short track program delivered one of the sharpest finishes of the Games, and it was Canada’s Steven Dubois who held his nerve when it mattered most.
At Milano Cortina 2026 on Wednesday, Dubois blasted to victory in the men’s 500m final, clocking 40.85 seconds to secure his first individual Olympic gold medal.
A Perfect Start, A Controlled Finish
In short track’s most explosive distance, the opening seconds are everything. Dubois reacted instantly to the gun and attacked the first corner, gaining the inside line before the pack could compress. That early advantage proved decisive. Skating compact, disciplined lines over four-and-a-half laps, he controlled the pace from the front and denied any passing opportunity.
The pressure intensified on the final lap as Dutch skater Melle van 't Wout surged in pursuit. But Dubois absorbed the challenge, crossing the line just 0.06 seconds ahead to seal gold. Melle van ’t Wout finished in 40.91 for silver, while compatriot Jens van 't Wout claimed bronze in 41.92, completing a Dutch double podium.
A milestone moment for Dubois
The victory marks a significant step in Dubois’ Olympic career.
- First individual Olympic gold
- Fifth Olympic medal overall
- Second medal of Milano Cortina 2026, after mixed relay silver
Having earned bronze at Beijing 2022, Dubois has now completed the climb to the top of the podium in the sport’s most unforgiving sprint.
Dutch momentum continues
For the Netherlands, the race added another layer to an already impressive campaign. Melle van ’t Wout captured his first Olympic medal on his Games debut, while Jens van ’t Wout secured his third medal of Milano Cortina 2026 after earlier golds in the 1000m and 1500m.
The result also delivered the Netherlands’ first Olympic medal in the men’s 500m, underlining their expanding strength across all short track distances.
Why the 500m is so ruthless
Unlike longer short track events, the 500m leaves little room for tactical maneuvering. With minimal time to recover from mistakes, the race often hinges on reaction speed and positioning into the first turn.
Dubois executed both flawlessly.
In a sport where margins are measured in hundredths of a second, his combination of acceleration, corner control and composure proved untouchable.
As Milano Cortina 2026 continues, the Canadian has firmly stamped his authority on the ice, and reminded the world why the 500m remains one of the Winter Olympics’ most electrifying events.
