Sturm Graz 1-0 Girona: Biereth on target as hosts claim first Champions League win

Mika Biereth (21) played a pivotal role in securing SK Sturm Graz's inaugural victory in this season's UEFA Champions League (UCL) group stage, as they triumphed over Girona with a score of 1-0 at the Worthersee Stadion.

Having previously scored only through an own goal against Stade Brestois on the opening matchday, the hosts came tantalizingly close to netting their first goal of the tournament just before the 15-minute mark.

In exceptional form this season, Biereth, who leads the Austrian Bundesliga scoring charts with 10 goals, nearly marked his UCL debut with a goal. However, Paulo Gazzaniga was alert and successfully denied the former Arsenal striker's well-placed shot.

Girona responded swiftly, but Bojan Miovski, despite being unmarked, could only direct his header over the bar.

At the other end, Sturm Graz squandered another opportunity when William Boving's solo attempt narrowly missed the post. This pattern persisted, with Gazzaniga again thwarting Dimitri Lavalee's powerful strike just before half-time.

Aiming for their fifth win in six matches across all competitions, Girona lamented their luck seven minutes into the second half when stand-in captain Juanpe had his goal disallowed for offside during the build-up.

The Blanquivermells faced further disappointment shortly before the hour mark, as Biereth capitalized on a rebound from Gazzaniga, who failed to secure Seedy Jatta's initial shot, putting Sturm ahead.

Remarkably, Girona responded almost immediately after the restart, with Alejandro Frances showcasing his skills as he advanced from full-back, only to fire wide of the target.

A late header from substitute Cristhian Stuani, which was comfortably saved by Daniil Khudyakov, marked Girona's final opportunity to equalize.

The significant triumph marks Sturm's inaugural victory against a Spanish team, propelling Jurgen Saumel's squad to within two points of the playoff spots.

On the other hand, Girona's loss contributes to an unfavorable chapter for Spanish football in the UEFA Champions League, as the Blanquivermells become the first team to suffer defeats in all three of their initial away matches.
