Stuttgart 1-1 Bayer Leverkusen: League leaders held to stalemate

Two unexpected contenders for the title clashed, leaving fans of both teams amazed at their current league positions.
Leverkusen started the match with an impressive unbeaten record in all competitions this season (W19, D2), making them the only team in Europe's top-five leagues that hasn't suffered a competitive loss yet. On the other hand, Stuttgart's 30-point tally at this stage of the campaign is the highest in the club's current format.
The hosts were the only Bundesliga team that hadn't drawn a match yet, and a high-intensity first half indicated that they had no intention of ending that streak.
Lukas Hradecky had to be alert to keep Stuttgart's attack at bay on multiple occasions, including a crucial save to deny Serhou Guirassy from scoring his 17th league goal of the season.
The visitors also posed a threat in the first half, but as halftime approached, it was Die Schwaben who turned their impressive expected goals into a tangible result.
Josha Vagnoman's penetrating run into the box exposed Leverkusen's defense, allowing him to find Chris Fuhrich for an easy tap-in.
If Stuttgart dominated the first half, it was certainly Die Werkself who took control after the break, equalizing almost immediately.
Victor Boniface, who has scored eight league goals this season, proved his importance with an assist, holding off Dan-Axel Zagadou and delivering a cross for Florian Wirtz to convert with a first-time finish.
With the momentum on their side, Leverkusen continued to apply pressure in the second half and came agonizingly close to taking the lead when Granit Xhaka's long-range strike hit the inside of the post.
The match ended in a back-and-forth affair, with both teams sharing the points. This result shouldn't disappoint either manager.
Although Stuttgart couldn't add to their joint league-high six home wins, the point earned further solidifies their position in the Bundesliga top-four, especially after Borussia Dortmund's defeat on Saturday.
In the meantime, Leverkusen, currently leading the league, has managed to secure an impressive 17 points from their seven away matches (W5, D2). Their unbeaten streak against Stuttgart in away matches since April 2010 (W7, D5) further highlights their dominance.
