Super Sunday: AC Milan take on Juventus Amidst Italian Football Gambling Controversy

AC Milan is gearing up to defend their slender two-point lead in the Serie A this Sunday as they prepare to face off against Juventus in a high-stakes encounter. However, the gravity of this monumental match risks being overshadowed by a growing scandal plaguing Italian football, involving allegations of gambling misconduct.

The seven-time European champions, are currently embroiled in controversy following reports suggesting that their former midfield star, Sandro Tonali, was involved in betting on Milan matches while still representing the team he cherished from his youth. Amid this turmoil, they face the relentless pursuit of their arch-rivals and closest challengers, Inter Milan, who are set to clash with Torino on Saturday.

Juventus, currently occupying the third position in the Serie A and trailing Milan by four points, find themselves entangled in a separate dispute. Nicolo Fagioli has become the first player to face sanctions for illicit gambling activities, adding to the controversy in Italian football that recently witnessed the suspension of Paul Pogba due to doping violations.

Fagioli, a 22-year-old talent, received a seven-month suspension on Tuesday after admitting his involvement in placing bets on football matches, triggering a criminal investigation into illegal gambling platforms and organized crime's infiltration into the football world. Meanwhile, Sandro Tonali, now playing for Newcastle United, is likely to face an extensive international ban.

The scandal has taken a wider scope, with disgraced photographer Fabrizio Corona, who has previously been incarcerated for extortion, facing legal action. He has made accusations against Roma's Stephan El Shaarawy and Lazio's Nicolo Casale of being involved in match-fixing.

El Shaarawy's legal team vehemently denies these allegations, describing them as "completely unsupported and libelous." The ongoing affair looms over the weekend's football action, with Corona and various media outlets disseminating rumors and apparent leaks originating from the public prosecutor's office in Turin, which is leading the criminal inquiry.

Gabriele Gravina, the head of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), declared on Thursday that they would not abandon these young players who have confessed to gambling addictions. He expressed a commitment to safeguard the reputation of Italian youth who have become vulnerable to this issue, and he has rebuffed calls for his resignation made by Italy's ruling right-wing government coalition.

Milan's head coach, Stefano Pioli, faces challenges ahead of the crucial encounter, with several key players either injured or serving suspensions. As a result, he will have to rely on his third-choice goalkeeper, Antonio Mirante, to prove Milan's mettle in the title race.

The absence of France's goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, who is serving a suspension, and an injury to Marco Sportiello, who is expected to be sidelined for at least a month, has left Milan with limited options in the goalkeeping department. Additionally, left-back Theo Hernandez is suspended, while midfielders Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Rade Krunic continue to be sidelined due to injuries.

Nonetheless, Milan will have the experienced Olivier Giroud returning to his customary center-forward role after temporarily stepping in as a goalkeeper in their previous match against Genoa, following Maignan's red card.
