Superb Paolini leads Italy to fifth Billie Jean King Cup title

World number four Jasmine Paolini (28) led Italy to its fifth Billie Jean King Cup title by defeating Rebecca Sramkova (28) with a score of 6-2, 6-1 in the second singles match, securing a 2-0 victory over Slovakia on Wednesday.
This triumph comes a year after Italy faced a heartbreaking loss to Canada in the final and over a decade since their last championship in 2013. The dynamic Paolini delivered an exceptional performance, celebrating exuberantly with her teammates and enthusiastic Italian supporters in a packed arena.
Slovakia, the underdogs who had previously surprised Britain on their path to the final, struggled to find their rhythm against a dominant Italian team, which began with Lucia Bronzetti's impressive 6-2, 6-4 victory over Viktoria Hruncakova in the opening match.
"It's unbelievable, amazing; I cannot find the words to express how I feel right now, it's just incredible," an emotional Paolini stated on the court.
"I believe we played an extraordinary week, and I am immensely proud of our performance in every match. I am very pleased that this year we were finally able to bring the title back to Italy."
Paolini had previously lost to Canada's Leylah Fernandez with a score of 6-2, 6-3 in last year's final held in Seville.
However, this time, the Wimbledon and Roland Garros finalist showcased a commanding display against the 43rd-ranked Sramkova, who struggled with cramps throughout the second set.
"I think last year Leylah (Fernandez) played exceptionally well, and she outperformed me. That is sometimes how sports go," Paolini reflected.
"Today, when I stepped onto the court, I told myself that I would give 100%... If you win, you win. But if you lose, you must accept that. We are determined to fight for every point, and today it worked in our favor."
Italy's ideal day commenced with an outstanding display from 25-year-old Bronzetti, who was participating in her second BJK Cup singles match, having secured her debut victory in the semi-final against Poland.
Bronzetti unleashed powerful serves and outclassed Hruncakova in two swift sets, which concluded in a mere one hour and 20 minutes.
"I am extremely proud to be here representing Italy, and I am thrilled with this victory," Bronzetti remarked.
"It was not as straightforward as it may have appeared. We are in the finals, so every match is challenging. I am very pleased to have contributed a point for Italy."
Paolini continued the momentum, finishing her match even more rapidly, defeating her opponent in just one hour.
