Swiatek and Medvedev dominate to reach Indian Wells quarter-finals

Iga Swiatek delivered a commanding performance at Indian Wells, cruising past Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-1 to secure a spot in the quarter-finals. The two-time champion showcased her dominance in the tournament, dropping only six games across three matches.
Swiatek wasted no time taking control, winning the first four games and maintaining a perfect first-serve record in the opening set. Muchova, who had a breakthrough run to the U.S. Open semi-finals last year, struggled to find her rhythm, committing a flurry of unforced errors in the second set.
"Sometimes matches can be pretty weird," Swiatek said. "It's enough for one player to not feel perfect and the other to feel great. Then suddenly the difference is much bigger than it usually is. But for sure I used my opportunities and I was pretty focused and composed."
The Polish star will face Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the next round after the Chinese player defeated Marta Kostyuk 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile, Elina Svitolina pulled off an upset over fourth seed Jessica Pegula, overcoming a three-hour rain delay to win 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. Svitolina will now face ninth seed Mirra Andreeva, who dismantled former champion Elena Rybakina 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour.
In the men's draw, Daniil Medvedev powered into the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over American Tommy Paul. After enduring several rain delays, the Russian fifth seed started strong, winning the first four games in just 12 minutes. Despite a brief dip in the opening set, Medvedev quickly regained control, securing a double break in the second set to close out the match.
Next up for Medvedev is Arthur Fils, who battled past Marcos Giron 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Holger Rune also made a statement, ending Stefanos Tsitsipas' seven-match winning streak with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. The 12th-seeded Dane delivered one of the shots of the tournament, executing a stunning ‘tweener from behind the baseline to win a crucial break point.
"I stayed very committed on my game plan and mentally I was very good. That made the difference," Rune said. "Because Stef is back in shape, I think it is fair to say. It was a cool battle."
Rune will take on Tallon Griekspoor in the quarter-finals after the Dutchman secured his first-ever Masters 1000 quarter-final appearance by defeating Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki 7-6(4), 6-1.
