Swiatek crashes out of Italian Open in shock loss to Danielle Collins

Defending champion Iga Swiatek has been eliminated from the Italian Open in a stunning upset by Danielle Collins, as the American powered to a 6-1, 7-5 win in the third round on Saturday.
Swiatek, the world number two and three-time champion in Rome, was widely tipped to dominate again at the Foro Italico, especially given her formidable track record on clay. But the Polish star looked out of sorts from the start, suffering four service breaks in the first set alone and struggling to find rhythm against a relentless Collins.
This was only Swiatek’s second defeat in 10 meetings with the American, and it marks her earliest exit in Rome since her debut in the tournament.
Danielle Collins shines ahead of French Open
World No. 35 Collins continues her strong form, following up on her Miami Open triumph last year. With fearless baseline play and aggressive returns, the 30-year-old American overwhelmed Swiatek early and held firm during a tense second set.
“She made it uncomfortable from the first game and I couldn’t adjust,” Swiatek admitted post-match.
Collins advances to the Round of 16, where she will face either Elina Svitolina or fellow American Hailey Baptiste.
What’s Next for Swiatek?
The loss raises questions ahead of the 2025 French Open, where Swiatek is the four-time reigning champion. While still a heavy favorite at Roland Garros, this defeat shows vulnerability that rivals will hope to exploit.
