Swiatek granted additional security in Miami following harassment incident

World number two Iga Swiatek is being provided with enhanced security measures at the Miami Open following an incident in which she was harassed by a spectator during her practice session.

This situation arises in the wake of British player Emma Raducanu being pursued by a stalker at the Dubai Open last month.

According to media reports, Swiatek experienced verbal harassment from a spectator known for a history of online abuse directed at her during her practice on Sunday.

"Security is a top priority. We monitor the network to catch these types of issues. Constructive criticism is one thing, and threats, hate speech or even disturbance during training is another - this cannot be condoned," a spokesperson for Swiatek told AFP.

"We reported the matter to the tournament organizer, as well as to the WTA, which reacted immediately and took additional precautions, such as additional security, for which we are very grateful.

"Ensuring the players' safety is of utmost importance; they are the focal point of the event, and it is our responsibility to safeguard them," the spokesperson stated.

The WTA chose not to provide a comment on the situation, instead referring inquiries to the statement issued by the tournament organizers.

Swiatek, who triumphed over Ukraine's Elina Svitolina on Monday, is set to compete against Alexandra Eala from the Philippines in her quarter-final match on Wednesday.

Raducanu was left in distress after a man, later identified as exhibiting "fixated behavior," was seen in a courtside seat during her match against Karolina Muchova.

The individual was removed by security, subsequently issued a restraining order, and prohibited from attending WTA Tour events.
