Swiatek off to flying start as Poland beat Brazil in season-opening United Cup

Swiatek concluded the previous season with an impressive winning streak, triumphing at the China Open and WTA Finals to regain her position as the top-ranked player.

In her rematch against Haddad Maia, who she faced in the French Open semi-final, Swiatek displayed her dominance by comfortably winning the opening set and taking a 4-1 lead in the next set.

Despite a slight setback in her serve, she managed to end Haddad Maia's seven-match winning streak, who had previously won the WTA Elite Trophy.

Looking ahead to the new year, Swiatek expressed her desire to become even stronger after enjoying a peaceful off-season.

Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledged that winning her first Grand Slam in 2020 had been overwhelming and caused her to lose focus on the right aspects of her game.

However, she made changes in 2021, including switching coaches, which presented her with a different challenge. Swiatek also mentioned that she has become accustomed to the pressure and attention that comes with her position in the tennis world, allowing her to solely concentrate on practicing and resting.

In another match, Hurkacz secured a victory for Brazil, defeating Thiago Seyboth Wild in a three-set battle. This win marked Brazil's second triumph in Group A of the $10 million tournament featuring 18 countries.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands emerged victorious over Norway in Sydney, with Wesley Koolhof and Demi Schuurs clinching the mixed doubles decider against Casper Ruud and Ulrikke Eikeri.

Prior to that, Ruud had leveled the Group F tie at 1-1 by defeating Tallon Griekspoor with an aggressive performance. The Dutch team had a strong start with Arantxa Rus winning her match against Malene Helgo.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, Ruud expressed his intention to adopt a bolder approach, aiming to be less defensive and more proactive on the court. He acknowledged that in the previous year, he had relied too much on defensive tactics and found himself constantly on the run.

The United States, the defending champions, will face Britain on Sunday, while Novak Djokovic of Serbia will begin his final preparations for the Australian Open by playing against China.

Zhang Zhizhen secured a victory against Jiri Lehecka from the Czech Republic with a score of 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, setting the stage for his match against the world number one.

In another match, Zheng Qinwen surprised Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 victory, securing the win for Group E. Germany also had a successful outing, defeating Italy 2-1.

Alexander Zverev overcame Lorenzo Sonego with a score of 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4, and later partnered with Angelique Kerber for a doubles victory against Sonego and Angelica Moratelli, winning 6-3, 6-0.

Prior to these matches, Jasmine Paolini overcame cramps to defeat Kerber 6-4, 7-5. This was Kerber's first singles match in 18 months after taking a maternity break, as she prepares for the upcoming Australian Open, which starts on January 14th, 2024.
