Switzerland send defending champions Italy crashing out of EURO 2024

Italy, the reigning European champions, were eliminated from EURO 2024 in the Round of 16 by a strong Switzerland team, with Ruben Vargas scoring twice in a 2-0 victory that sent them to the quarter-finals for the second consecutive tournament.

Switzerland's victory was fueled by their previous success in defeating the then-world champions France at the same stage three years ago, which gave them a boost of confidence.

Despite being considered underdogs, Switzerland displayed great composure and control of the ball.

Although they struggled to convert their momentum into scoring opportunities, Breel Embolo forced Gianluigi Donnarumma to make a smart save just before the 25-minute mark, and Federico Chiesa's low shot was blocked by Manuel Akanji.

Italy's performance in the first half was lackluster, with their only notable chance coming from Chiesa's blocked shot. Switzerland, on the other hand, continued to apply pressure and had several attempts on goal, eventually taking the lead through Remo Freuler's volley from a pass by Ruben Vargas.

Despite Donnarumma's efforts, Switzerland extended their lead with a stunning curled effort from Vargas just after the restart, securing their place in the quarterfinals.

Italy, despite not being the best, was aware that Switzerland had not kept a clean sheet in their last four matches. Gianluca Scamacca hit the post as Italy tried to find a way to get back into the game.

Substitutions threatened the Swiss defense, but strong performances from Akanji and Schär ensured the result was never in question.

Switzerland easily defeated Italy, securing their first win in nine matches against their rivals and only the second victory since hosting the 1954 World Cup.

Luciano Spalletti's future may be in jeopardy after a disappointing performance in Germany, while either England or Slovakia will face Murat Yakin's team in the quarterfinals.
