Tallon Griekspoor defeats Mpetshi Perricard to keep Indian Wells dream alive

Tallon Griekspoor continues to showcase his talent at Indian Wells, advancing to the fourth round of the ATP 1000 tournament by defeating Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

In a remarkable match on Friday evening, Griekspoor eliminated the tournament's top seed, Alexander Zverev, in a contest that featured two sets decided by tiebreaks. Just two days later, the Dutch player was set to compete against the promising young talent, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

This encounter marked the first meeting between the two players, who arrived with contrasting results from their previous matches—Griekspoor having triumphed over Zverev, while Mpetshi Perricard advanced after Fabian Maroszan retired following the first set.

Mpetshi Perricard initially lost his serve in the second game but quickly responded with a break of his own. The two players maintained their serves thereafter, leading to a tiebreak to decide the first set.

Drawing on his experience from previous tiebreaks in the tournament, Griekspoor seized an early minibreak on Mpetshi Perricard's third service point and ultimately secured the set, capitalizing on a double fault from his opponent while not conceding any breaks.

The 28-year-old Griekspoor started the second set strongly, winning his opening game without dropping a point and breaking Mpetshi Perricard in the fourth game.

Despite the Frenchman’s efforts in only his third set of the tournament, he struggled to match Griekspoor's intensity, committing 15 unforced errors in the second set—13 more than his Dutch rival.

Griekspoor triumphed over Mpetshi Perricard with a score of 7-6 (3), 6-3 in California, marking his second advancement to the fourth round of an ATP 1000 tournament. He is set to face the winner of the match between qualifier Yosuke Watanuki and local favorite Frances Tiafoe.
