Taylor Fritz expresses frustration over ITF's decision to permit off-court coaching

World number six Taylor Fritz has expressed his concerns regarding the International Tennis Federation's (ITF) recent decision to permit off-court coaching starting in 2025, arguing that it would undermine the individual strategic and psychological aspects of the sport.

The ITF made this announcement on Monday, stating that off-court coaching would be allowed from January 1, following a resolution reached during the governing body's annual general meeting earlier this month.

According to the ITF, this change aims to render tennis "fairer and, potentially, more entertaining."

Off-court coaching has already been trialed in all four Grand Slam tournaments, as well as on the ATP and WTA tours since 2023.

Fritz, who was a finalist at the US Open, has previously voiced his opposition to off-court coaching and reiterated his dissatisfaction with the new rule in a post on X, stating: "Can we stop ruining the 1v1 mental/strategic aspect of the sport PLEASE."

Former world number 10 Denis Shapovalov also lamented the decision, expressing his disappointment as a fan of tennis. He remarked on X, "Tennis is special because you are out there alone. Why are you trying to change the beauty of this game?"

Stuart Miller, the ITF's senior Executive Director, noted that the decision was made after consultations with key stakeholders, including players, coaches, and umpires.

"Players felt it was a positive development and makes tournaments more interesting for them. Coaches have indicated that it aids player development and enhances the standing of their profession," Miller stated.

"Chair umpires have mentioned that it allows them to concentrate on monitoring the game and making accurate decisions, rather than worrying about whether a coach is violating the rules."
