Team USA women’s hockey declines White House invite after Olympic Gold triumph

The gold medal–winning U.S. women’s hockey team has declined an invitation to attend President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address following their triumph at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
A spokesperson for USA Hockey confirmed the team was “sincerely grateful” for the invitation but cited previously scheduled academic and professional commitments as the reason for their absence.
“Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate,” the statement read. “They were honored to be included and are grateful for the acknowledgment.”
According to reports, several players were still traveling back to North America when the invitation was extended, making attendance logistically challenging.

A Historic Gold Medal Run
The decision comes just days after Team USA secured one of the most dramatic victories of the Milano Cortina Games. In a gripping overtime final against Canada, the Americans rallied late in regulation before sealing a 2-1 win. Captain Hilary Knight tied the game with under two minutes remaining, deflecting a shot into the net to force overtime.
Moments later, Megan Keller maneuvered past a defender and buried the golden goal, clinching the United States’ third Olympic women’s hockey title.
The game became the most-watched women’s hockey contest in history, underscoring the rivalry’s global appeal.
Parallel Drama in the Men’s Final
Just three days later, the U.S. men’s team delivered a near-identical script — defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime.
Jack Hughes scored the decisive goal, marking the first Olympic men’s hockey gold for the United States since the legendary Miracle on Ice squad in 1980.
The men’s team accepted the White House invitation, with players speaking publicly about the honor of representing the country. Matthew Tkachuk described the experience as a “whirlwind” and said the team felt nationwide support throughout the tournament.
Travel and Scheduling Complications
Logistics played a significant role in the women’s team decision.
While the men flew by charter back to the United States, many women’s players were on commercial flights and did not land in North America until Monday evening. With professional leagues — including the NHL and the PWHL — resuming play shortly after the Games, schedules were already tightly packed.
Reports indicated the players learned of the invitation late Sunday, leaving little time to rearrange travel plans. The White House has not publicly commented on the status of both teams’ attendance.
Spotlight Beyond the Ice
The invitation followed remarks from President Trump during a congratulatory call with the men’s team, in which he joked about needing to invite the women’s squad as well. The comment drew attention across social media before the formal invitation was extended.
Vice President JD Vance had attended two of the U.S. women’s preliminary round victories earlier in the tournament. Despite declining the State of the Union appearance, the women’s team emphasized appreciation for the recognition of their achievement.
A Golden Moment for American Hockey
Regardless of political headlines, the 2026 Winter Olympics will be remembered for two unforgettable overtime victories against Canada. For the women’s team, the comeback final reinforced their status as one of the most successful programs in international hockey. For the men, it marked a generational breakthrough.
Together, the victories delivered a rare Olympic sweep and a powerful moment of national pride. On the ice, both teams made history. Off it, their paths briefly diverged, but the legacy of Milano Cortina remains firmly intact.
