Ten Hag suffers debut defeat as Leverkusen fall to Hoffenheim in Bundesliga opener

Bayer Leverkusen endured a disappointing 2-1 home loss against Hoffenheim in their opening Bundesliga fixture on Saturday, marking an unsuccessful league debut for new manager Erik ten Hag. The defeat came as a surprise for the domestic double winners from 2024, who had taken an early lead before ultimately succumbing to their visitors.
The Dutch coach, who took over from Xabi Alonso during a significant squad reconstruction, witnessed his team struggle despite opening the scoring. The summer exodus saw more than half a dozen crucial players depart, including standout performers Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah and Granit Xhaka, leaving visible gaps in the team's structure.
The reigning German champions appeared lacking in creativity and sharpness in attack, while their defensive unit clearly felt the absence of Tah's commanding influence. The match highlighted the challenges facing ten Hag as he attempts to rebuild the squad following their remarkable previous campaign.
"Clearly, I am disappointed. It was a game of few chances and Hoffenheim were more effective," ten Hag said. "We did not get into the final third of the pitch often enough. Twice we did not pay attention and we conceded a goal."
The former Ajax Amsterdam and Manchester United boss acknowledged the significant task ahead while maintaining a measured outlook on the team's prospects.
"We have a lot of work ahead of us which is not unexpected. From my experience it may take some time. But we need to remain calm and keep working," added the Dutchman. "What is positive is we did not allow too much at the back and the players showed spirit, fighting until the end."
The match began with early drama as Hoffenheim struck the woodwork through Tim Lemperle within two minutes, but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock when Jarell Qansah found the net with a header in the sixth minute. However, Leverkusen's advantage was short-lived as Fisnik Asllani restored parity in the 25th minute after getting the better of goalkeeper Mark Flekken.
The visitors completed their comeback seven minutes into the second half when Lemperle converted from 22 yards with a precise low drive. Leverkusen struggled to create meaningful opportunities thereafter, with Nathan Tella's effort into the side netting representing their best chance to level the score.
The result stands in stark contrast to Bayern Munich's commanding 6-0 victory over RB Leipzig in Friday's Bundesliga season opener, highlighting the different trajectories of Germany's top clubs as the new campaign begins.
