Thai government to explore hosting F1 street race in Bangkok after Domenicali meeting

Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra held a meeting with Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali on Tuesday, during which he announced that the government would initiate a feasibility study to explore the possibility of hosting a Grand Prix on a street circuit in Bangkok starting in 2028.

Currently, Formula 1 has a packed calendar featuring 24 races globally, with four events taking place in the Asia-Pacific region, including the Singapore Grand Prix in Southeast Asia.

While Thailand boasts an FIA-accredited racetrack in Buriram, located in the northeastern part of the country, which is used for the MotoGP world championships, the current proposal focuses on establishing a street race in the nation's capital.

"We had the opportunity to discuss the opportunity of Thailand to host the Formula 1 race, which is a great sport with a worldwide following," the Thai Prime Minister posted on X after the meeting with Domenicali at Government House.

"The government confirmed that it will study this joint investment, including the study of the race route, the investment budget, and the value for Thailand to receive from hosting the race."

Paetongtarn expressed her belief that organizing a race would serve as a chance to enhance Bangkok's infrastructure, as the city's roadways are well-known for their congestion. Additionally, she noted that it could draw more international tourists, especially those from the "high-end" segment.

"I believe that all Thai people will benefit from organising this event, whether it is large-scale infrastructure investment, job creation, new income generation, and importing new technologies and innovations," she added.

"I am confident that this project will be successful. It is another important opportunity for the country to organise a world-class event."

Formula 1's chief executive, Domenicali, shared a statement on X, characterizing the proposal for a race in Bangkok as "impressive."

"I am looking forward to continuing our discussions in the weeks and months ahead," the Italian added.
