Thailand keen to host Formula 1 race on streets of Bangkok

The possibility of witnessing Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton racing through the bustling streets of Bangkok has excited Formula 1 enthusiasts.

Thailand has expressed its eagerness to host a grand prix, and Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin took the opportunity to present this vision to F1 chief Stefano Domenicali during their meeting on Monday.

While no specific timeline or detailed plans have been disclosed yet, Thai officials have shared their vision of organizing the race on a street circuit, potentially encircling the historic center of the traffic-congested Thai capital.

Following the meeting with Domenicali, Srettha took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express his confidence in Thailand's ability to host Formula 1 in Bangkok.

He stated, "Thailand has the necessary infrastructure to accommodate Formula 1 in Bangkok. If we succeed, I firmly believe that our country will create remarkable memories for others due to our immense potential, capabilities, and the warm hospitality of the Thai people."

Srettha's administration is actively promoting "soft power" initiatives to enhance Thailand's reputation, and securing an F1 race could significantly boost tourism as the country's economy, which heavily relies on visitors, recovers from the effects of the pandemic.

Formula 1, on the other hand, is eager to include more street races in its calendar.

According to government spokesperson Chai Watcharong, "Ideally, if Thailand were to host an F1 race, we would prefer it to be a street race... we are currently in the process of making this happen."

Currently, Alex Albon of Williams is the sole Thai competitor in F1 and the second driver in history to represent the kingdom.
