Thanasi Kokkinakis injury halts Nick Kyrgios Australian Open doubles comeback

Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis's attempt to replicate their 2022 Australian Open doubles victory concluded in retirement on Thursday, as Kokkinakis was unable to proceed with their first-round match.
Kokkinakis received medical advice against participating in the match against fellow Australians James Duckworth and Aleks Vukic after exacerbating an arm injury during his five-set defeat in the singles second round to Britain's Jack Draper on Wednesday.
"I will likely require a significant procedure now. I need to consult with as many specialists as possible," Kokkinakis informed reporters after withdrawing while trailing 7-5, 3-2.
"I am unable to serve or execute a high forehand. The pain is considerable. I wanted to assess my competitiveness, even without a serve.
"I was eager to step onto the court again with my partner. We have such wonderful memories. We knew a large crowd was waiting for us."
The Australian pair drew crowds that reached their COVID-restricted limits during their unexpected journey to the title at Melbourne Park three years ago.
Following his opening-round defeat on Monday, Kyrgios hinted that he might not participate in singles at his home Grand Slam again, but he remains open to continuing in doubles alongside his friend.
"I believe that at our full potential and health, we could still make a significant impact in doubles. The crowd seemed ready to erupt from the very beginning," Kyrgios remarked.
"Personally, I cannot envision myself competing in high-level singles beyond this year... Doubles is less taxing on the body. I am confident we can still perform exceptionally well in doubles."
