Thomas Tuchel 'Agrees Deal' to Become England Manager

Thomas Tuchel is set to take over as the manager of England’s national football team after reportedly agreeing to a deal with the Football Association (FA). If confirmed, the 51-year-old German will become just the third foreign manager to lead the Three Lions, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Tuchel has been out of a job since his departure from Bayern Munich at the end of last season. During his career, he has managed top European clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea, where he achieved his most notable success by winning the Champions League in 2021.

The FA has not yet officially commented on the reports, but its CEO, Mark Bullingham, is expected to provide an update on the managerial situation at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday. Sky Sports also reported that Tuchel is currently the frontrunner to replace Gareth Southgate as the long-term England boss.

Tuchel’s appointment would fit the profile of a “world-class coach who has won trophies,” which England’s interim manager, Lee Carsley, described as a priority after the team’s 3-1 Nations League victory over Finland on Sunday.

Despite a promising tenure at Chelsea, where Tuchel also won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, he was dismissed in a surprise move by the club’s new ownership in September 2022. He then took the helm at Bayern Munich, guiding the German club to their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title, although Bayern experienced a rare trophyless campaign under his leadership last season.

Interim manager Lee Carsley has been leading the team since Gareth Southgate resigned after Euro 2024, where England reached the final. While Carsley initially expressed interest in the permanent role, his stance appeared to change after a 2-1 defeat to Greece in the Nations League last week. He has openly supported the idea of appointing a foreign coach, stating, “The best candidate should get the job.”

Tuchel is expected to inherit a talented generation of English players, including stars like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Cole Palmer, who will be key figures for the team as they aim for World Cup glory in 2026. Southgate’s tenure saw England reach back-to-back Euro finals and the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the World Cup, but they remain in pursuit of their first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup victory.
