Thomas Tuchel confirmed as England manager from January 2025

Thomas Tuchel, aged 51, has been appointed as the new manager of the England national football team, as announced by the Football Association (FA) on Wednesday. The German coach has entered into an 18-month contract effective from January 1, which will extend until the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.

Tuchel is the third foreign individual to take on the role of England's head coach, following in the footsteps of Sweden's Sven Goran Eriksson and Italy's Fabio Capello.

"I am immensely proud to have been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the England team," Tuchel remarked. "I have always felt a deep connection to the sport in this country, which has already provided me with remarkable experiences."

"Representing England is a significant honor, and I am eager to work with this exceptional and talented group of players."

The FA indicated that Tuchel was the "preferred candidate" among several interviewed for the position, which became available after Gareth Southgate's exit in July.

The board finalized the decision to appoint Tuchel last week, on Tuesday, October 8, with the announcement being postponed to "minimize distraction" during the current international camp.

In his new role, Tuchel will be supported by English coach Anthony Barry.

FA CEO Mark Bullingham expressed enthusiasm about the appointment, stating, “We are delighted to have secured Thomas Tuchel, one of the world's leading coaches, along with Anthony Barry, who is among the finest English coaches available. Our recruitment process was comprehensive."

"Thomas impressed us greatly with his extensive experience and determination. Anthony is a top English talent with international coaching experience with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal."

"Our primary goal was to assemble a coaching team that would maximize our chances of winning a major tournament, and we are confident they will achieve this. Thomas and his team are singularly focused on providing us with the best opportunity to win the World Cup in 2026."
