Tiafoe battles past Alexei Popyrin into US Open quarter-finals

Frances Tiafoe of the United States, aged 26, advanced to the quarter-finals of the US Open for the third consecutive year on Sunday, defeating Alexei Popyrin, who had previously triumphed over Novak Djokovic, with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3.

Tiafoe is determined to end a 21-year drought for American men in major tournaments, but he faced a challenging match against the powerful Popyrin, drawing inspiration from the enthusiastic crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium, a venue he had long aspired to compete in as a child.

Popyrin, an Australian, entered the match following the most significant victory of his career against defending champion Djokovic in the third round. Despite serving 24 aces, he also committed nine double faults and made several critical unforced errors.

Tiafoe expressed his gratitude to the fans at Arthur Ashe for their unwavering support.

"This court brings out the best in me, and you are truly incredible fans," he remarked. "Without your support, this achievement would not have been possible."

He continued, "Having witnessed the Williams sisters and Roger Federer claim titles here, I aspired to play on this iconic court, named after Arthur Ashe. I wanted to be part of that legacy, and it inspires me to perform at my best."

As the men's draw has seen the exit of several prominent players, including Djokovic and third seed Carlos Alcaraz, with only one former champion remaining, Tiafoe remains focused and grounded.

"I take it day by day, quite literally," Tiafoe stated, recalling his stunning upset of Rafa Nadal two years ago that led him to his first major semi-final. "Grand Slams span two weeks, and there is much to navigate. It is essential not to get ahead of oneself or speculate on potential outcomes. Every competitor is formidable, so the presence or absence of certain players is irrelevant."

In the match, Tiafoe successfully defended against two break points in the fourth game and broke Popyrin's serve from the baseline in the ninth game, showcasing an impressive performance in the opening set.

Popyrin gained momentum early in the second set, managing to hold his serve through a five-deuce third game before executing a perfectly placed drop shot to convert a break point in the fourth game.

The Australian player, who triumphed at the Canadian Open the previous month, subsequently lost momentum and conceded a break to Tiafoe due to a double fault in the sixth game of the final set.

Tiafoe secured victory on his third match point with a forehand winner that barely grazed the line, celebrating by flexing his muscles for the enthusiastic home crowd. Tiafoe's next match will be against Bulgarian ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals.
