Tiger Woods and world's top 100 named in PGA Championship field

The field for the upcoming 106th PGA Championship at Valhalla was announced on Tuesday, including Tiger Woods (48) and the world's 103 top-ranked golfers.

Woods, a 15-time major winner, has faced challenges completing four rounds in tournaments since sustaining severe leg injuries in a 2021 car accident. Despite this, he managed to finish 60th in the Masters last month and aims to participate in one event per month leading up to the US and British Opens.

Currently ranked 801, Woods has been granted a special invitation to compete in the upcoming US Open. He withdrew from the most recent PGA Championship after three rounds in 2022, having missed the event last year due to ankle surgery.

Woods and Rory McIlroy, a four-time major champion from Northern Ireland, have both claimed PGA Championship victories at Valhalla - Woods in 2000 and McIlroy in 2014.

The PGA field boasts 33 major winners, with 16 of them having previously won the PGA Championship.

There are two remaining spots in the 156-player field, which will be filled by the winners of this week's PGA Tour events if they are not already qualified for the tournament in Louisville, Kentucky.

Among the participants are top-ranked Scottie Scheffler, who secured his second Masters title last month, and the top 103 players in the official world golf rankings.

Scheffler will be absent from this week's PGA Tour signature event as he supports his wife Meredith during her pregnancy.

Defending champion Brooks Koepka is one of 16 players from the LIV Golf League set to compete in the second major of the year.

Other LIV players in the top 100 include Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Cameron Smith, Lucas Herbert, Adrian Meronk, Joaquin Niemann, and Patrick Reed.

Notable major winners from LIV include Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and Martin Kaymer.

American Talor Gooch, the reigning LIV season champion, has received his fifth consecutive invitation to the PGA Championship. His best finish was a tie for 20th in 2022, but he failed to make the cut last year.

The field also features 21 club professionals, 20 qualifiers, and Michael Block, who returns after finishing 15th last year at Oak Hill.
