Tilak Varma's heroics powers India to thrilling two-wicket win over England in second T20I

Tilak Varma delivered a match-winning performance, smashing an unbeaten 72 to guide India to a nail-biting two-wicket victory over England in the second T20 International on Saturday. The hosts now hold a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, chasing down 166 with four balls to spare.
India’s chase began shakily as they were reduced to 78-5, but Varma’s brilliance rescued the innings. The 21-year-old showcased his class, hammering five sixes and four boundaries to single-handedly guide India to the target.
Brief contributions from Washington Sundar (26) and Abhishek Sharma (12) offered support, while Suryakumar Yadav added a quick 12 before falling in the sixth over.
England’s Brydon Carse was the standout bowler, claiming three crucial wickets, including those of Yadav, Sundar, and Dhruv Jurel. However, Jofra Archer’s expensive spell, conceding 60 runs in four overs, proved costly for the visitors.
The chase reached a tense climax when India needed six runs off the final over. Varma sealed the victory in style with a drive through the covers, leaving England disappointed.
“When we were five down, I just focused on playing each ball on its merit and staying calm. Winning this for the team feels amazing,” Varma said after the match.
Earlier, England managed 165-9 after being put in to bat. India’s bowlers struck early, with Arshdeep Singh removing Phil Salt for four in the first over and Washington Sundar dismissing Ben Duckett for just three in his only over.
Captain Jos Buttler led England’s charge, smashing 45 off 30 balls before mistiming a pull shot to Tilak Varma at deep mid-wicket. Jamie Smith impressed on debut with 22 off 12, while Carse counter-attacked with a quickfire 31 off 17, including three sixes.
However, England failed to build strong partnerships, and a late run-out of Carse in the 17th over stalled their momentum. Contributions from Adil Rashid (10) and Archer (12 not out) helped England scrape to 165, with Rashid falling to Hardik Pandya in the penultimate over.
India’s victory adds to their dominant seven-wicket win in the first T20I in Kolkata. With the series now firmly in their grasp, India will aim to secure an unassailable lead in the third match in Rajkot on Tuesday.
