Tottenham 1-0 Manchester United: Red Devils continue to struggle as Spurs claim much needed home win

Tottenham Hotspur ended their seven-match winless run at home in the league (D2, L5) by securing a 1-0 victory against Manchester United in the Premier League. This outcome represents the first time since the 2012/13 season that the Red Devils have experienced three losses to the same opponent within a single season.
Typically vying for European qualification, both teams found themselves in unusual circumstances at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, entering the match firmly positioned in the lower half of the league table.
Injuries have significantly impacted Spurs’ season; however, the return of Guglielmo Vicario provided a much-needed boost, as the goalkeeper made crucial saves against Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho in quick succession, before Ben Davies cleared Diogo Dalot’s follow-up effort off the line.
Tottenham quickly took advantage of this near miss, breaking the deadlock when Andre Onana deflected Lucas Bergvall’s shot into the path of James Maddison, who scored his first goal in 11 Premier League matches against United.
In search of an equalizer, Joshua Zirkzee narrowly missed the target with a bending shot, shortly before Garnacho squandered a prime opportunity from inside the box, extending his goal drought that has persisted since November.
The first half was characterized by open play and opportunities for both sides, yet only one goal separated them at halftime after league debutant Mathys Tel failed to convert Son Heung-min’s cut-back past Onana.
The second half resumed with a fluid exchange, as Tel shot wide following a promising run down the flank by Djed Spence.
United then enjoyed their most productive phase of the match, with Garnacho testing Vicario under pressure from Pedro Porro, moments before forcing the goalkeeper into a low save at his near post with a powerful shot.
Reluctant to utilize an inexperienced bench largely composed of teenagers, Ruben Amorim maintained his starting lineup until the 91st minute, though the absence of Amad Diallo who is likely to miss the remainder of the season due to injury—was keenly felt.
A fleeting header from Zirkzee that sailed past the far post represented United's nearest attempt at securing a late equalizer, while Onana was called upon to deflect Dejan Kulusevski’s shot from close range shortly thereafter.
This marks yet another frustrating day for Amorim, as his team falls to an astonishing 15th position in the league table, now trailing behind Tottenham, who have climbed to 12th place after achieving consecutive Premier League victories following a dismal stretch of seven matches without a win (D1, L6).
