Tottenham 1-1 Fulham: Cairney rescues point for Cottagers before seeing red

Fulham rallied to secure a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, achieving a club-record eighth consecutive Premier League London derby without a loss (W4, D4).

Following an impressive 4-0 victory over Manchester City in their previous Premier League match, Ange Postecoglou’s team aimed for a strong start, seeking to establish the consistency that had previously eluded them.

An early defensive error provided Son Heung-min with a chance, but Bernd Leno responded effectively as Spurs began to pose a threat on the counterattack.

At the opposite end, Raúl Jiménez appeared poised to score when he found himself unmarked in the penalty area; however, his well-placed side-footed attempt was thwarted by Fraser Forster, who was making his first Premier League appearance in 18 months.

The Cottagers continued to create significant chances in the first half, with Alex Iwobi’s deflected shot striking the crossbar being the closest they came to scoring.

Just before half-time, Spurs also hit the woodwork, as James Maddison's low free-kick narrowly missed the near post after being executed cleverly beneath the Fulham wall.

Having scored in each of their last 11 Premier League matches leading up to this encounter, Marco Silva’s team maintained their momentum after the interval, but once again Forster denied them, this time saving Issa Diop’s header that had bounced off his knee.

In a surprising turn of events, and contrary to the trend of conceding first this season, Tottenham took the lead through Brennan Johnson, who finished Timo Werner’s lofted pass with a precise volley from close range.

More accustomed to coming off the bench than starting, Fulham’s club captain Tom Cairney entered the match and equalized in the 67th minute, striking Iwobi’s cut-back emphatically from just inside the box.

The conclusion of the match was quite open to interpretation, yet it ultimately resulted in a draw, as Cairney exited the pitch early due to a red card issued for a perilous tackle on Dejan Kulusevski.

Tottenham's inability to build on their significant victory against City has left them in seventh place in the league standings, trailing Nottingham Forest by two points.

On the other hand, Fulham has experienced only one loss in their last five league matches, despite a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers. This performance has propelled the Cottagers into the upper half of the table, where they are now tied on points with three other teams.
