Tottenham 1-2 Newcastle United: Magpies extend winning run, piling more misery on Spurs at home

Tottenham Hotspur faced a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United, marking their sixth consecutive home match without a victory in the Premier League, thereby intensifying the scrutiny on manager Ange Postecoglou.

With injuries and illnesses plaguing an already struggling Spurs team, the arrival of a revitalized Newcastle was particularly unwelcome at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Despite the prevailing negativity surrounding Postecoglou’s squad, it was the home team that opened the scoring.

Pedro Porro delivered an exquisite cross to Dominic Solanke, who executed a remarkable diving header past Martin Dubravka just four minutes into the match.

However, the elation was short-lived as Anthony Gordon responded with a precise angled shot that found the net, leaving Brandon Austin to retrieve the ball just six minutes into his Premier League debut.

Spurs appeared to have a chance for reprieve when the ball seemed to strike Joelinton’s arm during the build-up, yet the goal was allowed to stand.

Newcastle capitalized on Tottenham’s defensive frailties on the left flank once more, but this time Austin made an impressive save to deny another angled effort from Gordon.

Eddie Howe’s team completed a first-half turnaround with a goal from the in-form Alexander Isak, who netted in his seventh consecutive Premier League match by steering Jacob Murphy’s deflected cross into the goal.

The second half saw Postecoglou’s team start with vigor, coming close to equalizing when Brennan Johnson’s follow-up shot struck the post after Dúbravka had made a superb one-handed save against Pape Matar Sarr.

James Maddison also nearly added a second goal for Spurs, but his excellent curling shot narrowly missed the far post.

In the final moments of the match, the North London side increased their offensive efforts, with both Johnson and Sergio Reguilon attempting to direct shots across the goal.

The recent revival did not bring any benefits, resulting in Spurs remaining in 11th place with just one win from their last eight league matches.

On the other hand, Newcastle's aspirations for a return to the UEFA Champions League next season were bolstered by a fifth consecutive victory in the top division, placing them just behind Chelsea on goal difference, prior to the Blues' upcoming match against Crystal Palace.
