Tottenham 3-6 Liverpool: Reds thrash Spurs in nine-goal Premier League classic

Liverpool once again triumphed in front of television cameras worldwide, as they, bolstered by four goal contributions from their star player Mohamed Salah, reestablished their four-point advantage at the top of the Premier League standings.
They secured a 6-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in North London, marking their 16th win in the last 24 encounters in the top flight, with 6 draws and only 2 losses.
With both teams set to face each other in the EFL Cup semi-finals in the upcoming year, this match provided both managers with insight into the challenges they will encounter as they aim for the first significant trophy of the season.
However, Liverpool's ambitions extend beyond this competition, and their commanding first-half display underscored their aspirations. Just days after a disappointing performance against Manchester United, Fraser Forster inadvertently handed Salah possession in the Spurs' penalty area within the first three minutes.
Nevertheless, the Egyptian's shot went awry, hitting the side-netting and allowing the home goalkeeper to escape unscathed. This moment foreshadowed the relentless assault that would follow, as numerous attempts were directed at Forster's goal, with Salah unusually failing to convert several opportunities.
The Premier League's leading scorer did manage to strike the crossbar after Tottenham lost possession in a precarious position, but the deadlock was soon broken as Liverpool took the lead midway through the first half.
The Reds had been causing significant problems down the right flank, leading to the opening goal when Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a precise cross that Luis Díaz expertly headed into the bottom corner.
As halftime approached, the visitors' persistent pressure resulted in a well-deserved second goal. A cross from opposite full-back Andrew Robertson was not adequately cleared by the Tottenham defense, allowing Alexis Mac Allister to head the loose ball past Forster.
The Argentinian's transformation from hero to villain occurred before halftime, as he was dispossessed by Dejan Kulusevski, which enabled James Maddison to curl in a shot and reduce his team's deficit.
However, any aspirations for a comeback from the home side were quickly extinguished, as another rapid Liverpool counterattack concluded with Salah assisting Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored just before the end of the first half.
This achievement made Salah the first player in Premier League history to both score and assist 10 goals prior to Christmas. He further increased his goal tally shortly after the second half commenced, converting from close range after Spurs failed to clear Gakpo’s cutback, marking his 228th goal for the club—only three players have surpassed this total.
Tottenham had no response to the visitors' relentless and incisive attacking strategy, with Salah netting a fifth goal in the 60th minute after being set up by Szoboszlai.
Despite Spurs' unwavering commitment to an attacking style, they managed to reduce the deficit with a well-placed volley from Kulusevski.
Dominic Solanke added another goal seven minutes from the end following a nod down from Brennan Johnson, but Ange Postecoglou’s growing hopes were dashed when Díaz scored Liverpool’s sixth, sealing a remarkable victory. This result marked Tottenham's 10th defeat in their last 12 encounters with teams that began the day at the top of the Premier League.
