Tottenham edge Liverpool in Carabao Cup Semi-Final First Leg

Tottenham Hotspur claimed a slender 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The decisive moment came late in the match, with young midfielder Lucas Bergvall netting his first goal for Spurs in dramatic fashion.
The match, however, was overshadowed by an early injury to Rodrigo Bentancur, who collapsed during the opening minutes. The game was paused for eight minutes as medics attended to the Uruguayan midfielder before he was stretchered off and taken to the hospital. Spurs later confirmed Bentancur was conscious and undergoing checks, offering some relief amid initial fears.
Cagey First Half and VAR Drama
Both teams struggled to find rhythm in a first half marked by cautious play and disrupted by injuries. Liverpool created a few promising chances, notably when Alexis Mac Allister headed straight at Tottenham's debutant goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Spurs, meanwhile, saw limited opportunities despite their home advantage.
The second half brought more intensity, with Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold and Darwin Núñez coming off the bench to inject energy into the visitors' attack. Núñez forced a strong save from Kinsky, while Alexander-Arnold saw a venomous strike cleared off the line by Radu Dragusin.
Controversy struck when Dominic Solanke thought he had opened the scoring for Spurs, finishing off Pedro Porro’s through-ball with aplomb. However, VAR ruled the striker offside, prompting frustration from the home side.
Bergvall’s Heroics
Just as the match seemed destined for a draw, Tottenham found their breakthrough. In the 78th minute, Solanke turned provider, setting up Bergvall in the box. The 19-year-old Swede struck confidently past Alisson, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Liverpool, frustrated by the officiating and their inability to capitalize on key moments, will feel aggrieved, particularly as Bergvall escaped a second yellow card earlier in the game for a rough challenge on Kostas Tsimikas.
The second leg at Anfield on February 6 promises to be a fiery encounter as Liverpool look to overturn the deficit and keep their hopes of silverware alive. Tottenham, seeking their first trophy since 2008, will hope their slim advantage is enough to see them through to the final at Wembley.
With tensions high and key players under scrutiny, the stage is set for an enthralling conclusion to this Carabao Cup semi-final clash.
