Tottenham rely on extra time to edge past non-league Tamworth after tense FA Cup third-round clash

Tottenham Hotspur of the Premier League required extra time to secure a 3-0 victory against Tamworth, a team from the fifth tier of English football, in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

This match showcased the potential for a significant upset right from the start, as Tamworth, comprised of part-time players, managed to compete effectively.

However, fatigue set in during extra time, preventing them from achieving what would have been one of the most remarkable surprises in the tournament's history.

"We should take pride in our performance; we pushed a top-six team to extra time," remarked Tamworth goalkeeper Jas Singh, who also works as a building surveyor, in an interview with ITV. "We had our opportunities, which is what makes it all the more frustrating."

After a scoreless first 90 minutes, the breakthrough came in the 101st minute when Nathan Tshikuna inadvertently scored an own goal following a low cross from Brennan Johnson, giving Spurs the lead. Substitute Dejan Kulusevski then extended the advantage by converting a pass from Son Heung-min, and Johnson capped off the scoring with a late goal.

Tamworth's supporters at the lively Lamb Ground had moments to celebrate, particularly when Beck-Ray Enoru, who works as a shop clerk, forced Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky into a spectacular save within the first minute of play.

Prior to the match, Enoru had humorously climbed onto a teammate's shoulders to patch a hole in the net with tape, drawing a chuckle from Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou. Additionally, Tamworth's Tom Tonks, known for his long throw-ins, nearly scored when his throw struck the far post.

Tom McGlinchey and Jordan Cullinane-Liburd both had excellent opportunities to secure a late winner for the home side, leaving manager Andy Peaks—who had recently transitioned from his job as a support worker to full-time management—shaking his head in disbelief.

Singh, whose partner had welcomed a baby boy the night before, delivered an outstanding performance in goal, thwarting several attempts from Spurs, including notable shots from James Maddison.
