Trent Alexander-Arnold confirms Liverpool exit, set to join Real Madrid on free transfer

Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold has officially announced he will leave Anfield at the end of the 2024/25 season, confirming widespread reports linking him with a move to Real Madrid. The England international, 26, is expected to sign a six-year deal with the Spanish giants, bringing an end to a remarkable 20-year journey with Liverpool Football Club.

In an emotional message posted on social media, Alexander-Arnold called the decision the “hardest of his life,” expressing both pride and gratitude for his time at the Merseyside club.

This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life,” he wrote. “I’ve been here 20 years now, loved every single minute of it, and achieved all my dreams. But I feel like I need a new change, a new challenge, both as a player and as a person.”

An Illustrious Liverpool Career Comes to an End

A product of the Liverpool academy, Alexander-Arnold made his senior debut in 2016 and has since accumulated 352 appearances, playing a pivotal role in Liverpool’s domestic and European successes under manager Jürgen Klopp. His departure comes shortly after helping the Reds secure the 2024/25 Premier League title, their second during his time at the club.

Over the course of his career at Anfield, the dynamic right-back collected an impressive eight major trophies, including:

  • 2× Premier League titles (2019/20, 2024/25)
  • 1× UEFA Champions League (2018/19)
  • 1× UEFA Super Cup
  • 1× FIFA Club World Cup
  • 1× FA Cup
  • 2× Carabao Cups
  • 1× Community Shield

Despite Liverpool’s efforts to renew his contract, no agreement was reached before he entered the final six months of his deal, allowing him to negotiate freely with foreign clubs from January 1. Real Madrid had initially approached the club in January, but the offer was rejected as Liverpool prioritized their title challenge.

Alexander-Arnold Bids Emotional Farewell to Fans

In a special interview with LFC TV, the Liverpool-born star thanked the club’s supporters and emphasized his emotional connection to Anfield.

“You guys have been there from the start… I hope they’ve felt my love for the club. I’ve given everything I could.”

Real Madrid Secure Long-Term Target

Real Madrid have long viewed Alexander-Arnold as a strategic signing and successor in the full-back position. Known for his exceptional passing range, creativity, and set-piece ability, the England international is expected to bolster the squad under Carlo Ancelotti as the Spanish club continues its focus on acquiring elite talent in their prime.

Earlier this year, Alexander-Arnold made clear that trophy ambitions would influence his future:

“The most important thing is trophies. I’m a player who is highly motivated by winning things and being elite.”

His move to the Bernabéu Stadium is seen as a massive statement of intent from Madrid, who are rebuilding their squad around world-class talent including Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Jr., and Eduardo Camavinga.
