PSV 3-2 Livepool: PSV Ends Slot's Champions League Streak with 3-2 Win Over Liverpool

Liverpool's flawless Champions League run came to an abrupt end on Wednesday, as PSV Eindhoven defeated a heavily rotated Reds squad 3-2 at the Philips Stadion. The Dutch side's victory snaps a remarkable streak, marking only their second win over Liverpool in the Champions League since 2007.
Young Liverpool Side Seizes Early Advantage
With 12 first-team players absent from the trip to Eindhoven, Liverpool fielded a team filled with young and fringe players, and they took the lead in the 24th minute. Joey Veerman misjudged a ball inside his penalty area, allowing Federico Chiesa to pounce and win a penalty after being fouled by the PSV midfielder. Cody Gakpo, facing his former club, confidently converted the spot-kick to give Liverpool the advantage.
However, the Dutch side wasted little time in responding. Johan Bakayoko, with a clever dummy, slipped past two Liverpool defenders and powered a shot past the goalkeeper to equalize for PSV just nine minutes later.
PSV Stuns Liverpool with Quick Turnaround
Despite a strong response from the Reds, who regained the lead thanks to Harvey Elliott tapping in a rebound from a denied Chiesa effort, PSV took control just before the break. In a dramatic five-minute stretch, Ismael Saibari scored from a tight angle to level the score again, and Ricardo Pepi, reacting quickly to a deflected cross, gave PSV a 3-2 advantage heading into halftime.
Second Half Fizzles Out
With both teams’ positions effectively secured—Liverpool already guaranteed to top the group and PSV unlikely to miss the playoffs—the second half lacked the same intensity. The most significant chance came from Saibari, who hesitated in front of goal, allowing Tyler Morton to make a last-minute tackle and deny the PSV attacker.
Liverpool’s night ended on a sour note as Amara Nallo was shown a red card shortly after making his full debut. The young defender fouled Bakayoko in the final minutes as he advanced toward goal, adding to an otherwise disappointing evening for Jurgen Klopp's men.
PSV Secures Playoff Spot
Despite the loss, Liverpool finished top of their Champions League group, with Barcelona unable to surpass them after a draw against Atalanta at the Camp Nou. For PSV, the victory was crucial, boosting their confidence and ensuring their participation in the upcoming play-off draw, as they climbed to 14th place in the standings.
