Udinese 0-2 Genoa: Genoa dominate 10-man Udinese as hosts dismal run continues

Genoa continued their resurgence with a well-deserved 2-0 victory over a 10-man Udinese, as Patrick Vieira’s team extended their unbeaten streak to four matches in Serie A.

The match began dramatically, placing the hosts in a challenging position when Alessandro Zanoli attempted to challenge Isaak Toure near the edge of the Udinese penalty area, only to be struck in the face by an errant elbow. Although the referee allowed play to continue initially, a VAR review resulted in a straight red card being issued just four minutes into the game.

As anticipated, Genoa quickly seized control and made their mark on the scoreboard ten minutes later. Milan Badelj’s tentative shot from the perimeter of the area was deflected into the path of Andrea Pinamonti, who capitalized on the opportunity by scoring from close range.

Midway through the first half, it appeared that Genoa would double their lead when Morten Thorsby intercepted a careless pass and maneuvered around Maduka Okoye. However, his attempt to score was valiantly thwarted by Lautaro Giannetti, who made a crucial block to keep Udinese in contention as the teams headed into halftime.

In response, Kosta Runjaic made a double substitution at the break, which seemed to stabilize Udinese as they began to regain their footing in the match. Nevertheless, they were unable to generate any significant chances to equalize.

As the game progressed, hope surged among the enthusiastic home supporters, only to be dashed with just over 20 minutes remaining when Genoa struck again.

Zanoli displayed impressive speed as he surged into the penalty area, and his cross was inadvertently deflected into the net by Giannetti, resulting in an own goal that sealed the match for Genoa.

Genoa successfully secured the victory, which allowed them to rise to 13th place in the standings, importantly placing them three points above the relegation zone.

On the other hand, Udinese has not achieved a win in their last five matches and continues to occupy a position in the top half of the table. However, following a promising beginning to the season, they now find themselves nearer to the relegation zone than to the spots for European qualification.
