UEFA Champions League Preview - All Need You To Know

It is now time for matchday six of the Champions League group stage, and while 12 teams have already secured their place in the last 16, there are still four spots up for grabs.
Manchester United is facing the possibility of an early exit, and even if they manage to defeat Group A leaders Bayern, it does not guarantee their progression. On the other hand, Group F is wide open, with PSG, Milan, and Newcastle all vying for a spot in the next round alongside Borussia Dortmund.
The early games on Tuesday will take place in Group B. Arsenal has already secured their place in the next round, winning four out of their five matches so far. They have only achieved this feat once before in the 2005-06 season when they reached the final. Gabriel Jesus has been exceptional for Mikel Arteta's side in Europe this season and could become the first player ever to score in five consecutive matches in the competition for the Gunners.
With PSV already guaranteed a spot in the next round, Lens and Sevilla are battling it out for third place and a spot in the Europa League. Sevilla, the current holders of the trophy, will secure third place with a victory. However, any other result will see Lens drop into UEFA's second-tier tournament.
Manchester United suffered a devastating 3-0 defeat at home against Bournemouth over the weekend, leaving their hopes of progressing in the Champions League hanging by a thread. In order to have any chance of moving forward, they must secure a victory against Bayern Munich, who themselves are reeling from a surprising 5-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt. Additionally, United will need a draw in the Group A match between Copenhagen and Galatasaray.
The Group A match between Copenhagen and Galatasaray is a crucial one, as the winner will secure a spot in the next round, or at least claim second place. This match, along with RB Salzburg vs Benfica, is likely to end in a draw, although such a result would not benefit either team if Manchester United emerges victorious. Copenhagen, who previously defeated Manchester United 4-3 in their home match, are considered slight favorites with a 39.2% chance of winning. Galatasaray, on the other hand, have struggled in away matches, winning only one out of their last 19 UEFA Champions League games.
While Union Berlin has already been eliminated, they still have a chance to qualify for the Europa League if they manage to defeat the formidable Real Madrid. Real Madrid's win probability stands at 72%. Real Madrid has been in excellent form, winning their last five Champions League games.
Napoli will be hosting Braga in their upcoming match, where they only need a single point to progress. Despite this, the Serie A champions are highly favored to secure a victory. However, they have never gone four matches without a win on home soil in major European competition.
The clash between Inter and Real Sociedad at San Siro will determine the top spot in Group D, as both teams have already secured their progress. The home side, Inter, are considered the favorites with a 57.9% chance of winning compared to La Real's 20.6%. This will be the first time Inter has hosted La Real since 1979. It's important to highlight that Inter has only lost one out of their last 12 matches in the UEFA Champions League (W7 D4), with that defeat occurring against Man City in last season's final (0-1).
RB Salzburg vs Benfica has a significant possibility of ending in a draw. Benfica has been unable to secure a win in their last seven UEFA Champions League games (D2 L5) and could potentially equal their longest winless run in the competition, which was eight games between March 2017 and September 2018.
The final matches of Group G kick off on Wednesday, with holders Manchester City facing Red Star Belgrade in Serbia. Manchester City aims to maintain their flawless record in the group, and our model predicts an 82.7% probability of them achieving victory. On the other hand, Red Star's chances are ranked at just 7.1%. It's worth mentioning that the only English team to have won all six group games in a season were Liverpool in 2021-22. Additionally, Manchester City is currently unbeaten in their last 18 Champions League matches (W13 D5), winning the last seven consecutively. If they manage to avoid defeat in this game, it would be the joint second-longest unbeaten run in the competition, alongside Ajax (19 between 1994 and 1996) and Bayern (two runs of 19 between 2001 and 2002 & 2019 and 2021). The record for the longest unbeaten run is held by their city rivals, Manchester United, with 25 games between 2007 and 2009.
RB Leipzig are heavily favored to defeat Young Boys in their upcoming match. Young Boys have struggled in their previous visits to Germany, winning only one out of five matches. Their most recent victory came in February 2021 against Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Europa League. However, Young Boys have yet to secure an away win in the Champions League, with eight unsuccessful attempts so far.
In Group E, the standings are almost finalized, but Lazio still has a chance to claim the top spot from Atletico Madrid if they can secure a victory in the Spanish capital. However, our predictor gives Lazio a slim chance of winning, with only a 17.3% likelihood of an away victory. Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, are clear favorites with a 62.9% chance of winning. They are determined to finish at the top of their group in the UEFA Champions League, a feat they haven't achieved since the 2016-17 season, as they have been runners-up in the previous four seasons they qualified for (2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22).
Feyenoord will travel to Glasgow to face Celtic, who are guaranteed to finish at the bottom of the group. This match is the most likely to end in a draw among Wednesday's fixtures, with a 24.9% chance. However, Feyenoord are considered the favorites with a 43.7% chance of winning. They will be aiming to win three games in a single campaign for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has struggled in the Champions League, failing to win any of his last 10 home games (D3 L7).
Group F is where the drama could unfold, as it remains wide open going into the final games. PSG must secure a victory against Borussia Dortmund to ensure their progression. If the Ligue 1 champions fail to advance, it would be another setback for the faltering Qatari project, although Luis Enrique would have little room to complain. It comes as no surprise that BVB, the current group leaders, are considered the favorites with a 44.9% chance of winning, given PSG's heavy reliance on Kylian Mbappé. The visitors, on the other hand, have a 30.4% chance of coming out on top. Dortmund will be aiming to finish at the top of their Champions League group for the first time since the 2020-21 season, when they reached the quarter-finals. Mbappé has been directly involved in at least one goal in all four of his Champions League starts against Dortmund, scoring four goals and providing one assist. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more goals against Dortmund in the competition, with a total of seven.
A draw may be sufficient for PSG, but Newcastle United and Milan will need a win to keep their hopes alive, and even then, three points are not guaranteed to secure their progression. Newcastle United will have the advantage of playing at home, and they will be looking to capitalize on that in front of their passionate St James' Park crowd.
Barcelona has already secured their place in the next round from Group H, although Xavi's side has not been particularly convincing. However, they should feel confident about finishing off the group stage with a victory when they face Antwerp, who have yet to earn a single point. The Blaugrana's chances of winning are rated at 64.1%. Avoiding defeat in this game will see Barcelona win their group in the Champions League for the 22nd time, including the second group stages, and the first time since the 2019-20 season. They already hold the record for the most group stage victories in the history of the competition, having topped their group.
Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk will compete fiercely to advance in the upcoming match. The highly regarded Portuguese team is favored to win with a 70.8% chance of success. However, their Ukrainian counterparts have displayed exceptional performance by accumulating nine points and defeating Barcelona along the way. It is worth noting that Shakhtar has only emerged victorious in one out of their last ten group stage matches in the competition, specifically on Matchday 6, while suffering four draws and five losses. Notably, their sole victory came against Manchester City during the 2017-18 season.
