Union Berlin 2-1 Dortmund: Union Berlin Stuns Dortmund with First-Half Goals, Leapfrogs Them in Bundesliga Standings

The match was highlighted by a rare goal from Kevin Vogt, who netted his first Bundesliga goal in over a decade.

Dortmund's defensive frailties were on display once again, having conceded five goals in the opening 25 minutes of their previous three matches. Union Berlin capitalized early, with former Dortmund defender Tom Rothe and Benedict Hollerbach threatening the visitors' backline.

Nico Schlotterbeck’s rash challenge on Hollerbach led to a penalty for Union, with Vogt stepping up to take it. The veteran defender coolly converted the spot-kick, ending his 275-match Bundesliga goal drought. Remarkably, three of Vogt’s four career Bundesliga goals have come against Dortmund.

Union Berlin doubled their lead just before halftime when Yorbe Vertessen fired a low shot through a crowded penalty area, beating Gregor Kobel to make it 2-0 after a corner clearance.

Dortmund, in need of another comeback like their recent fightback against Bochum, began to push forward. Their best chance came on a counter-attack, as Maximilian Beier surged towards goal, but Union goalkeeper Frederik Rønnow made a crucial save to keep them at bay.

However, Dortmund pulled one back moments later, with Julian Brandt setting up Julian Ryerson, who calmly slotted the ball past Rønnow to score against his former club.

Despite Dortmund's increasing pressure, Union Berlin remained dangerous on the break, with Vertessen, Hollerbach, and Tim Skarke all creating chances. Ultimately, Union held firm, securing their fourth win in seven matches under head coach Bo Svensson.

The victory moves Union temporarily into the top six of the Bundesliga standings, while Dortmund is left to rue another slow start.
