Union Saint-Gilloise end 110-year wait for Belgian Cup success with win over Antwerp

Union Saint-Gilloise put an end to a 110-year wait by clinching the Belgian Cup with a 1-0 victory over Royal Antwerp in the final in Brussels on Thursday.

Koki Machida, the Japan international, scored the winning goal by converting a corner in the final minute of the first half, securing Union's first cup triumph since 1914.

The match faced a brief interruption at the beginning of the second half due to flares being set off by Antwerp supporters.

Despite Antwerp's efforts to equalize, including a late chance by Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, Union's defense held strong.

Mohamed Amoura had a chance to double the lead in stoppage time but missed the target.

Union, who have experienced a resurgence in recent years, are now aiming for success in the league after last winning the title in 1935.
