United States overcome Germany to top Davis Cup group as quarter-finals loom

A secondary United States team continued their successful streak in the Davis Cup by decisively defeating Germany, thereby securing the top position in Group C in Zhuhai on Saturday. Both nations had already qualified for the quarter-finals of this prestigious men's team tournament.

Despite the absence of prominent players such as US Open runner-up Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Frances Tiafoe during this week's Finals group stage, the American squad demonstrated considerable strength, achieving their third consecutive victory against Germany.

Brandon Nakashima contributed significantly to the American cause by winning his match against Maximilian Marterer with a score of 6-4, 6-2, thereby establishing an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the second singles match of the day. This victory marked a perfect start to Nakashima's debut in the Davis Cup.

"It has been an incredible week. Being part of this team is truly special," Nakashima remarked. "Representing my country has always been a dream since I began playing tennis, and I am thrilled to have secured three wins for the team."

World number 309 Reilly Opelka, who has returned to competition this season following surgeries on his hip and wrist, saved three match points and delivered powerful serves at crucial moments to defeat debutant Henri Squire with a scoreline of 6-7(4), 7-6(9), 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 earlier in the day.

In the doubles match that followed, Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz triumphed over Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek with a score of 6-1, 7-6(4). US captain Bob Bryan expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance throughout the week, which showcased the depth of talent in singles.

"We have a wealth of exceptional players in the U.S. right now, as reflected in the rankings. There are numerous options available for the Finals," Bryan stated. "I commend these players for their efforts in bringing us to Malaga. We have a couple of months to rest and prepare, and we are eagerly anticipating the upcoming competition."

The leading two nations from each of the four groups, situated in various cities, will advance to the Final 8 knockout stage scheduled to take place in Malaga in November.

Spain and Australia, both strong contenders, secured their spots following the matches on Friday, alongside the United States and Germany.

Defending champions Italy also progressed after Brazil initially took a 2-0 advantage against Belgium in Bologna. Joao Fonseca triumphed over Raphael Collignon with a score of 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3, while Thiago Monteiro narrowly defeated Zizou Bergs 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-5.

Belgium maintained their chances of advancing from Group A as Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen achieved a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory against Rafael Matos and Felipe Meligeni Alves.

Argentina marked their return to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2019 with a 3-0 victory over Finland in Group D in Manchester. Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni overcame Harri Heliovaara and Patrick Kaukovalta with scores of 6-3(7), 6-4, 6-3.

Earlier, Tomas Martin Etcheverry defeated Eero Vasa 7-6(5), 6-3, and Francisco Cerundolo won against Otto Virtanen with a scoreline of 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-0.

In Group B, France clinched a doubles decider against the Czech Republic late on Saturday evening, although neither team remains in contention after losing both of their matches in Valencia.
