Uruguay's winless streak extends after a goalless draw against Ecuador

Uruguay created numerous opportunities in the early stages of the match but ultimately had to settle for a goalless draw against Ecuador at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.

Nevertheless, both teams remain in a strong position to advance successfully in the 2026 FIFA World Cup CONMEBOL qualifying campaign.

The match commenced with a high tempo, as both sides sought to assert their physical presence. Gradually, Uruguay began to dominate the game, largely due to the impactful performances of Federico Valverde and Darwin Nunez.

Valverde nearly opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a powerful free-kick from 30 yards, but Hernan Galindez made an outstanding save to deny him. Facundo Pellistri and Maximiliano Araujo also had promising chances, yet the visiting goalkeeper was up to the task on each occasion.

By the middle of the first half, it was evident that the 37-year-old goalkeeper was the standout player, as Ecuador struggled to cope with Uruguay's intensity. Nunez had one last opportunity before halftime, attempting a shot from around the penalty spot, but his effort struck the right post, leaving the scoreline unchanged.

Consequently, Uruguay entered the dressing room at halftime still level, although it was clear that Marcelo Bielsa’s side had been the more dominant team in the first 45 minutes and were well-positioned to capitalize on their advantage in the second half.

However, La Celeste found it challenging to replicate their first-half performance after the break, with Ecuador earning commendation for their defensive resilience as the match wore on.

A sudden lack of creativity from the home team resulted in very few scoring opportunities, and while Uruguay maintained possession, they failed to convert it into meaningful chances.

Ecuador, on the other hand, adopted a counter-attacking approach, and although substitute Kevin Rodriguez's speed was beneficial, La Tri rarely posed a threat to Sergio Rochet in the Uruguay goal.

Uruguay intensified their offensive efforts in the closing moments, yet their endeavors to secure a goal proved fruitless.

Ecuador will certainly be pleased with the draw, as it signifies that manager Sebastian Becaccece has experienced only one defeat in his initial four matches at the helm, while maintaining the team's position in the qualification standings.

Conversely, Bielsa and his team may feel they were deserving of a more favorable outcome, especially considering their performance in the first half. They now find themselves without a victory in four matches and have not found the back of the net in 379 minutes of World Cup qualifying play.
