US Open run a reward for years of hard work says Jack Draper

The impressive ascent of Jack Draper (22) continued at the US Open on Wednesday as he secured his inaugural place in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam event. However, the British 25th seed emphasized that this achievement was not the result of sudden success.

Draper has emerged as a prominent figure at Flushing Meadows, having defeated Alex de Minaur, thus becoming the first British male player to reach the US Open semi-finals since Andy Murray in 2012.

At just 22 years of age, Draper had never advanced beyond the fourth round of a Grand Slam and has claimed only one title on the ATP Tour, spending a significant portion of 2023 recovering from a shoulder injury.

"Last year marked a significant turning point for me, as I faced injury challenges and had to take considerable time off during the summer due to my shoulder," Draper explained to the media.

"I observed numerous young, talented players achieving remarkable victories. Competing on the grandest stage, I felt I was not doing enough to reach that level myself.

"This journey has not been instantaneous for me. I have long believed in my efforts and the right approach. I was confident that my moment would eventually arrive."

Draper has triumphed in all five of his matches at the US Open without losing a set, yet he expressed confidence in his capacity to compete effectively over five sets.

"I feel like a more well-rounded player. I have always had some concerns about playing five sets, both physically and in terms of the mental and emotional toll it could take on me," Draper remarked.

"I still believe there is much more I can offer. It reassures me greatly to know that my body feels strong and prepared, allowing me to endure if necessary."

In the semi-finals, Draper will face either Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner or 2021 US Open victor Daniil Medvedev, who are scheduled to compete later on Wednesday.

Draper has previously faced both potential opponents once, having defeated world number one Sinner on grass in 2021 and suffered a loss to Medvedev at the Italian Open earlier this year.

When inquired about the potential benefits of his past experiences, Draper responded, "I believe that competing alongside both of them is advantageous. During my match against Daniil in Rome, I was uncertain about what to anticipate.

"Competing against the top players globally is challenging, as their prowess is often intimidating, especially when you observe them securing Grand Slam titles on television.

"You might think to yourself, 'Tomorrow, I will step onto the court, and they will undoubtedly outclass me.' However, if you focus on your own game and execute your strategies effectively, opportunities will arise."
