USA defeat Canada in overtime to win Women’s Ice Hockey Gold at Milano Cortina Olympics

The United States once again found a way. In a rivalry that has defined women’s international ice hockey for nearly three decades, the Americans came from behind to defeat Canada 2-1 in overtime at the Milano Cortina Olympics, reclaiming the gold medal in dramatic fashion.

Megan Keller delivered the decisive moment just over four minutes into three-on-three sudden-death overtime, maneuvering past defender Claire Thompson and sliding the puck beyond Canadian goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens.

The victory secured the third Olympic gold medal in women’s hockey for the United States and ended Canada’s reign as defending champions.

Knight leads the comeback

For much of the night inside Santa Giulia Arena, it appeared Canada would hold firm. The Americans had dominated their earlier group-stage meeting 5-0, handing Canada their first Olympic shutout in history. But championship games rarely follow script.

Canada struck first with a shorthanded goal in the second period. Laura Stacey forced a turnover in the neutral zone before feeding Kristin O'Neill, who finished with a composed backhand move to give Canada the lead.

It was the first time the United States had trailed in the tournament. The Americans pressed relentlessly but struggled to solve Desbiens, who delivered a composed and technically sharp performance through two and a half periods.

With just over two minutes left in regulation and their net empty for an extra attacker, captain Hilary Knight stepped forward once again. Knight redirected a shot from Olympic rookie Laila Edwards to level the score, sending the crowd into a frenzy of alternating “USA” and “Canada” chants. The goal not only forced overtime but also cemented Knight’s status as the all-time leading American goal scorer in Olympic women’s hockey history.

She’s been part of every historic moment since she joined this team,” teammate Kelly Pannek said. “For her to get that goal was huge for all of us.

Keller delivers the Golden Moment

This marked the third time in four Olympic Games that the women’s hockey final between USA and Canada required overtime, a testament to the narrow margin separating the sport’s two powerhouses.

When Keller seized her moment in the extra period, she did so with decisiveness.

Skating into space, she shifted around Thompson and tucked the puck just inside the post. Desbiens later admitted the goal would replay in her mind for a long time, a reflection of how fine the margins were.

On the other end, American goaltender Aerin Frankel stood tall, stopping 30 of 31 shots and providing the stability needed to mount the late comeback.

Head coach John Wroblewski was visibly emotional behind the bench as the final whistle confirmed another Olympic chapter in the rivalry.

A Rivalry Redefined — Again

Canada entered the Games with five Olympic gold medals in women’s hockey and a long history of dominance. But momentum had shifted.

The United States captured the most recent world championship and swept Canada in the pre-Olympic Rivalry Series. Youth and speed were evident advantages in Milan, with several American players still in the collegiate ranks.

Thursday’s win marked the Americans’ eighth consecutive victory over Canada in international competition — a significant psychological shift in a rivalry long defined by Canadian supremacy.

The United States have now reached seven of eight Olympic finals since women’s hockey debuted at the 1998 Nagano Games, underlining their consistency at the highest level. Earlier in the day, Switzerland secured bronze with a 2-1 overtime win over Sweden, rounding out a tournament that once again showcased the global growth of women’s hockey.

Beyond the medal, this victory signals generational renewal.

Veteran leadership from Knight blended seamlessly with emerging talent like Edwards and Keller. With several players yet to turn professional, the pipeline remains strong. If this final proved anything, it is that the gap between the two North American giants remains razor-thin, and must-watch television every time. Milano Cortina adds another unforgettable chapter to a rivalry that shows no sign of cooling.
