USA defeat Canada to win first Olympic Men’s Hockey Gold since 1980

Jack Hughes scored 1:41 into overtime as the United States stunned Canada 2-1 in Milan to claim their first Olympic men’s ice hockey gold medal since the Miracle on Ice in 1980.
The United States are Olympic men’s ice hockey champions again. Forty-six years after the “Miracle on Ice” triumph at Lake Placid, Team USA defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime at the Milano Cortina Games to capture their third Olympic gold, and their first since 1980.
The hero was Jack Hughes, who buried the winner just 1 minute and 41 seconds into sudden-death overtime, igniting wild celebrations on the American bench and silencing a partisan crowd dressed largely in red and white.
For Canada, it was heartbreak. For the United States, it was history reclaimed.

A Final Worthy of the Rivalry
This was the third Olympic gold-medal meeting between the North American rivals and the first since Sidney Crosby’s famous overtime goal at the 2010 Vancouver Games. Canada entered Sunday chasing a record-extending 10th Olympic gold in men’s hockey. Instead, the Americans delivered when it mattered most in the first Games featuring NHL players in 12 years.
The atmosphere inside the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena felt like hostile territory for the US from warm-ups onward. Boos rained down. Chants of “U-S-A!” and “CAN-A-DA!” echoed around the rink. But the Americans brought intensity from the opening faceoff.
Boldy strikes first
The breakthrough came exactly six minutes into the first period. Matt Boldy split two defenders and fired past Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington to give the US an early 1-0 lead.
Canada responded with pressure, outshooting the Americans heavily across the second period. Their equaliser finally arrived late in the frame when Cale Makar rifled a shot through traffic to level the game at 1-1. From there, the contest tightened into a nerve-shredding duel.
Hellebuyck’s Masterclass
If Hughes delivered the headline moment, Connor Hellebuyck delivered the foundation. The US goaltender stopped 41 of 42 shots in a performance that will live long in Olympic memory. Time and again, he denied Canada’s biggest stars, including a clean breakaway from Connor McDavid.
The Americans also executed a crucial 5-on-3 penalty kill in the second period, preserving their perfect penalty-kill record in the tournament.
By the third period, the US were absorbing wave after wave of Canadian pressure, hanging on as shots mounted. But Hellebuyck stood firm. “Unbelievable game by Hellebuyck,” Hughes said afterward. “He was our best player by a mile.”

Hughes delivers the Golden Goal
After 60 minutes could not separate them, the final went to three-on-three overtime. It did not last long. Hughes latched onto a feed from Zach Werenski and snapped a low shot between Binnington’s legs. The puck crossed the line. The bench erupted. Helmets flew. Gloves followed.
Forty-six years to the day after the iconic 1980 triumph over the Soviet Union, the United States were champions again. “We’re underdogs to Canada, but we beat them,” Hughes said. “It could have gone either way.”
An Unbeaten Run to Gold
Team USA finished the tournament a perfect 6-0, outscoring opponents 26-9. This marked the first time the Americans have won Olympic men’s hockey gold at a Games featuring NHL players.
Canada, meanwhile, were denied a 10th title despite icing a squad packed with elite talent. Veteran Crosby, now 38, did not dress for the final due to injury, denying fans one last Olympic chapter in his storied rivalry with the US.
Tribute to Johnny Gaudreau
As celebrations unfolded, US players carried a No. 13 jersey in tribute to the late Johnny Gaudreau, who died in 2024. His jersey had hung in the locker room throughout the tournament.

On the ice, teammates honoured him once more as they skated through the chaos of celebration. It was a moment that connected past and present, grief and glory intertwined.
A Rivalry Renewed, A Legacy Extended
USA vs Canada in hockey rarely disappoints. This chapter delivered drama, tension and a finish worthy of Olympic folklore. For a generation that grew up hearing about the Miracle on Ice, Milan provided its own golden memory.
This time, it was Hughes who wrote the script. And this time, it was America on top of the hockey world.
