USA wins women's football gold after defeating Brazil

The United States secured a historic fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal in women's football, triumphing over Brazil with a 1-0 victory in the final held at Parc des Princes on Saturday, thanks to a goal from Mallory Swanson (26).

After a scoreless first half, Swanson found the net 12 minutes into the second half, leading the U.S. to their first Olympic title since London 2012, following an impeccable tournament performance.

U.S. coach Emma Hayes experienced immediate success, clinching the title just two months after assuming her role.

"I am overwhelmed with emotion; this has been a dream of mine," a visibly emotional Hayes expressed to Eurosport. "I owe my gratitude to my father for encouraging me to reach this point, allowing me to coach such an extraordinary group of players who have welcomed me warmly."

"They have embraced every request I made; they are remarkable individuals, athletes, and role models. I hold them in high regard."

Brazil posed a threat in the early moments of the match, nearly scoring when Gabi Portilho forced a remarkable save from Alyssa Naeher just before halftime. Naeher again showcased her skills in injury time, denying Adriana's close-range header.

Brazilian legend Marta made her return after serving a two-match suspension due to a red card, entering as a substitute after the hour mark, but her presence did little to alter the outcome as Brazil fell to the Americans in an Olympic final for the third time.

Germany claimed the bronze medal by defeating Spain 1-0 on Friday.

Swanson, in her 100th international match, scored with a precise low shot following a solo effort and an excellent pass from Korbin Albert that sliced through the Brazilian defense.

This marked her fourth goal of the tournament.

Despite creating three significant opportunities, Brazil was unable to convert and send the match into extra time, yet they received a warm ovation from their supporters after the final whistle.

The match was a fiercely contested battle, witnessed by a large crowd at the Paris Saint-Germain stadium, which included notable figures such as former Ballon d'Or winner Megan Rapinoe, ex-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, and actor Tom Cruise.

The audience was remarkable, Brazil was exceptional, and I find myself at a loss for words," remarked former Chelsea manager Hayes.
