Utah Jazz fined $100K for violating NBA's player participation policy

The NBA has fined the Utah Jazz $100,000 for breaching the league’s Player Participation Policy, citing the team’s failure to make star forward Lauri Markkanen available for multiple games, including the March 5 matchup against the Washington Wizards.

Following the league’s announcement on Wednesday, Utah adjusted Markkanen’s status from questionable to available for their game against the Memphis Grizzlies, though he remained listed with a back injury. If he takes the court, it would mark his first appearance since February 22.

Speculation has surrounded the Jazz’s decision to keep Markkanen sidelined in recent weeks, with many believing he is healthy enough to play. With Utah holding a 15-50 record and currently on a six-game losing streak, some suggest the team may be prioritizing its draft position for next season.

Markkanen, Utah’s top scorer, is averaging 19.3 points and 6.1 rebounds in 43 games this season. Now in his third year with the Jazz and eighth in the NBA, the Finnish forward was an All-Star during the 2022-23 campaign.
